Leadership Theories - Great Man Theory, Trait Theory, Contingency Theory, Situational Theory
Leadership Theories are philosophies that explain why, how and the way ordinary individuals become great leaders. Leadership Theories puts the onus on the behavior, traits, and qualities that make great leaders. Leadership Theories – Great Man Theory The Great Man Theory suggests that great leaders have an inborn ability to lead because of the right traits like intellect, charisma, confidence, interaction skills and social skills. The leaders in this theory are defined as mythic and valiant destined to rise at predestined levels when the situation demands Leadership Theories – Trait Theory The Trait Theory is used to predict the characteristic of effective leadership. It puts the onus on physical attributes like familial background, appearance weight and height, demographics like education and age, and intelligence comprising of judgement, decisiveness, and knowledge. Leadership Theories – Contingency Theory The Contingency Theory states that one leadership style cannot apply to all situations and tries to find a specific setting that will identify the style best suited for that situation. It considers the style that can find a balance between contexts, behavior and needs perfect for most situations. Leadership Theories – Situational Theory The Situational Theory states that the leadership style should depend on the situation and specific variables like the nature of followers and the type of task so that it proves effective. Leadership Theories – Behavioral Theory The Behavioral Theory puts the onus on particular actions and behavior of leaders and not their characteristics as it believes that it is learned skills like conceptual skills, human skills and technical skills that create effective leaders. Leadership Theories – Transformational Theory The Transformational Theory suggests that great leaders are inspiring and charming as they can motivate their followers to improve tasks. The four elements of this theory are Intellectual Stimulation, Individualized Consideration, Inspirational Motivation and Idealized Influence. Leadership Theories – Transactional Theory The Transactional Theory puts the onus on supervision, structuring and teamwork. In this theory, the leadership action is based on rewards and punishments.
