Managed dedicated server is a service that includes the hardware, software, and ongoing upkeep of a dedicated server. Hosting providers bundles additional services and products with the servers to provide a deeper level of management. Managed dedicated server providers employ full-time system administrators that maintain dedicated servers. In short you buy a server and pay them a monthly/yearly fee to keep it running (it’s like a contract). Providers like Rackspace, Linode charge upward of $100/month just to manage it. Do not think that they will continuously install and do stuff as per your command. They will define their role at the very beginning of the contract and make sure that what they have promised is up and running all the time. Unmanaged servers on the other hand are just plain vanilla box which have nothing but a OS of your choice. Now, you need to get your hand dirty install everything, environment, libraries, tools etc. If you are good with managing server or you have people in your company capable of doing it for you then it would be an economical solution. Hardware, Bandwidth, some level of security and Paid backups are quite common features which you will get with unmanaged servers. Economically, since your host is providing a dedicated or shared unmanaged server they can only charge for what’s being given. Managed server (provider companies) require qualified engineers who monitor, configure and handle your server with a sole responsibility of keeping the server up all the time. For their efforts they charge nominal amount.

Well managed servers can mean servers where everything is managed by the hosting provider. That means hardware managed, power provided, internet provided, Os installed and other software such as Webmin or Cpanel/WHM or Vurtuoso. Every security measure will also be catered for by the providing company however you may pay for licenses by yourself. Though sometimes they made be cover in the monthly server costs. Unmanaged is the total opposite however Internet, Hardware setup, DDoS mitigation and security and power is provided. In unmanaged environments, you may install all the software and configure by yourself.

Managing a server requires time, effort and technical expertise. In Managed VPS Hosting, your service provider takes care of all the server related responsibilities like core updates, maintenance, software installation, etc. so you, the business owner can concentrate fully on growing your business. Managed VPS Hosting in simple words, is a hands-free approach. As the name suggests, unlike Managed VPS Hosting in Unmanaged VPS Hosting you, the business owner, have to take care of all the server responsibilities and maintenance tasks, whereas, your hosting provider only takes care of the physical server and its availability.

Imagine you’re renting a car, and you’ve been given the choice between two different vehicles. The first one is completely Do It Yourself(DIY) – you’ll be responsible for handling everything from refueling to regular maintenance to replacement and repair. Basically, you’ll end up being both driver and mechanic. The second choice does everything for you. It handles any repairs that need to be done and refuels itself whenever it’s running low. All you need to do is drive – the car handles everything else. Maybe it’s not a perfect analogy – but you get what I’m trying to say here, right?
