People ask me all the time whether having half a decade of experience is important when opening up a restaurant. Or if 2 years is enough. Or if no experience is ok. The thing is...having experience is great. But even a decade worth of restaurant experience will not fully prepare you for what it is like to start a restaurant business. No experience is ever enough. There are just SO many things that may happen that it is impossible to see it all. Even myself with 10 years of being in business I am still learning something each day. So 5 years of being a chef or 5 years working front of house would not have helped me dodge ALL the mistakes I made.
